This article describes a model of consciousness-raising and conscientization, based on Noam Chomsky's notion of "intellectual self-defence," that can form the foundation of an approach to teaching and learning that facilitates the development of critical thinking in teachers and students.

It uses the issues surrounding child labour and slavery on cocoa plantations to facilitate a process whereby students design and implement a Consumer-Awareness Campaign about the existence and relevance of Fair Trade chocolate.
